Exploring nature of spiritual artifacts in Mexico at the intersection of dreams, religious beliefs and reality through a portrait of an elderly woman, a street market seller, whose very presence evokes an ethereal connection to the revered Virgen de Guadeloupe. It unravels the rich tapestry of Mexico's visual religious culture, exposing the profound quest for meaning that permeates every corner.
In a surreal exploration of religion and the act of infusing meaning into everyday objects, the protagonist believes that the divine can materialize through these visual relics, which she offers for sale in local markets.
Personal Sacramentals Growing up in Poland, where the religious landscape is dominated by a rigid and conservative form of Catholicism, I was shocked upon arriving in Mexico. There, I encountered a vibrant and omnipresent world of religious icons and symbols, freely used and adapted to individual preferences and needs. I was mesmerized by the overlap of cultures and beliefs, which gave rise to a rich, visually dynamic tradition.
Inspired by this, I began collecting meaningful objects and creating my own—blending locally found treasures with my personal artistic expression. This became my way of exploring how our perception of an object’s value can give it the power to influence our daily lives, our sense of belonging, safety, and purpose.
